Star Party Rules:
We call our dark sky site “Star Village”.
NO PETS ALLOWED (see more below)
The Enchanted Skies Star Party (ESSP) takes place in the Cibola National Forest by special permit. Be a responsible visitor to public lands. Leave No Trace. These seven rules are from the US Forest Service:
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Leave What you Find
- No Camp Fires due to Local Drought Conditions
- Respect Wildlife
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors
REGISTRATION: All ESSP events at the “Star Village” are limited to registered attendees. Please keep a copy of verification of your registration with you at all times.
5 mph speed limit. Try to minimize dust wakes by driving slowly.
Children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
NOISE: Many attendees will be up until dawn to observe. Please keep all noise to an absolute minimum. Show consideration for your fellow observers. If you wish to have music while observing, please use headphones. In the campgrounds, there shall be no noise or music in the mornings before noon. Also, please no RV generators running from 7AM to noon.
ALCOHOL: No alcohol is allowed.
SMOKING: No smoking on the star party grounds. Smoke well away from other people, optics or community tents. When lighting up, turn away from others and cup your hand around the flame to avoid any light pollution. Be mindful of the direction of the wind and where your smoke may travel. Put ashes into a safe ashtray to prevent a wildfire. Completely douse smoked butts and dispose of them safely, not on the ground.
FIREWORKS: No fireworks are allowed.
FIREARMS: No discharging of firearms in or near the dark sky site.
SECURITY: You are responsible for your own security: however, there will be hosts at “Star Village” at all times.
CAMPING SITES: On arrival to “Star Village”, you will be assigned a camping site. These are the ONLY approved designated areas. Plan to arrive BEFORE 6PM so that you may drive nearby to your site to unload, then park your vehicle in the parking lot. Gate for cars closes at 7PM nightly.
CAMPFIRES: No campfires are permitted.
PETS: NO pets are allowed at ESSP events, except for registered service animals, which must be kept on a six-foot leash at all times. There is a boarding kennel in Socorro, NM. Black Dog Boarding Kennel.
LIGHTS: There shall be no white light at night. The following restrictions are in effect from 7:45 PM until 6:00 AM (effectively the ending and beginning times of astronomical twilight). Vehicle headlights, parking lights, brake lights and interior dome lights must remain off at all times. Remove fuses or equip interior lights with red filters or red bulbs if you intend to open your car doors near the observing area.
Trailer and camper lights must remain off unless there is sufficient shielding installed on windows and doors to prevent light from being seen outside.
Lanterns and other forms of outside lighting are not permitted. Smokers should try to shield their lighters.
Flashlights must be equipped with red filters or red bulbs.
Those who wish to drive vehicles away from the observing area after dark must park in the parking area designated for that purpose. Those who park inside the observing areas may not move their vehicles after nightfall.
Medical emergencies take precedence over the rules.
GENERAL COURTESY: We are guests of Magdalena, New Mexico and the National Forest Service. Please leave all Enchanted Skies Star Party areas clean and free of garbage and debris. Clean up and dispose of trash in the containers provided. Please do not throw cigarette butts or any other trash on the ground. Be kind to the ground (no unnecessary tire tracks, etc.)!
